Suncor is suffering right now because it bought Petro and Petro has deep sea wells. These have fallen into disrepute now because of the Gulf Oil Spill. Suncor will go up this summer. Just hold on. Actually, this is an excellent time to buy Suncor.

Q. Investment question about mergers (suncor & petrocan)?
in lieu of the announced planned merger between suncor and petrocan, it can only be assumed that the merge will in both the short run and long run increase the stock price, especially since the merge will result in a premier behemoth oil merger. my question is...i want to invest...what should i buy? petrocan...or suncor? or both? and what happens to my stock when they merge? will they become one entity? so my stock will be combined together? or what exactly will happen? thanks!

I think it would be too late to buy stock in the company being bought. Those stock holders are being bought out already by the purchasing company of Suncor for $32Billion and they will probably gain. So they wouldn't sell to anyone else right now. To buy into the company doing the buying would be risky since they are taking on new debt and may actually lose value after a while.

ok help me understand,140 per barrel was a stock price of 73.00 for suncor,petro was 61.00 cdn. and petro on the dow was 62.00us. times 20% is 75.00 cdn. so with the merger and the barrel at 50 per puts the new premier canadian energy company ,at what price? heres my est.----35.00 per share is 75 % drop looks to be undervalued ,petro trades at 4 times earnings,10 times is normal risk, petro is 6 billion profit per year and plus the profit of suncor now,so with just petro ,means 60.00 per share should be the new price at 50.00 per barrel,with the merger,just a guess what you think is the real price off the stock with the merger?

Your pretty close (35) with the caveat that oil remains at least in the 50's Shale is really only viable with oil above that range

calgary, alberta--(marketwire - feb. 9, 2010) - suncor energy has reached an agreement with progress energy resources corp. to sell certain natural gas properties for approximately $390 million. current production on these lands is approximately 43.8 million cubic feet equivalent per day (mmcfe/d). the sale includes properties known as jedney, beg and blueberry, which are located in british columbia about 125 kilometres northwest of fort st. john. the sale is expected to close at the end of the first quarter and is subject to closing conditions and regulatory approvals typical of transactions of this nature. as part of its strategic business alignment, suncor plans to divest of a number of non-core assets. the proposed divestments include certain natural gas assets in western canada and the united states rockies, all trinidad and tobago assets and certain non-core north sea assets, including all assets in the netherlands. to date, including the u.s. rockies assets and the assets announced today, suncor has reached agreements to dispose of assets for aggregate consideration of approximately $907 million.

Suncor is a large integrated oil and gas company in Canada. They also own a refinery near Denver. It looks like the price did drop Wednesday, after the announcement on Tuesday night. The key to what happens in the future is what they do with that money.
