Q. Which is safer ibuprofen or tylenol? which is safer ibuprofen or tylenol?
tylenol causes liver damage and ibuprofen cause stomach bleeding but which is safest? please list sources (i.e. website with articles on this topic) if known. are there other over the counter pain killers that are safer? also what would be a good pain killer for someone that consumes more than 3 alcoholic drinks a day since the tylenol and ibuprofen both say not to take if one consumes more than 3 or more alcoholic drinks a day
additional details
i'm needing to take a pain reliever for pms cramps and im alot a binge drinker..about once a week or so...
i dont take the booze with the pills i try not to drink during and right before that time of the month
"Tylenol and ibuprofen are both very safe..."
Tylenol and Ibuprofen are both very safe. If you're taking them for PMS, ibuprofen is better equipped to handle your type of pain since it is an NSAID drug. It helps reduce inflammation caused by PMS, therefore helping the pain you are feeling. As for drinking, I don't recommend you drink with the pills, I would take the pills at least 3 hours before your first drink to allow them to break down and move through the stomach before you get all jacked up.

Q. My oxycodone 5mg meds are being back order so my doctor gave me anew prescription for oxycodone w\tylenol.safe? i have end stage liver disease i've been told that i should not take tylenol, ibuprofen, naproxen or any type asprin because of bleeding. i know better but the nurse said it wouldn't bother my liver. what would you say?
"Oxycodone is percocet and all percocet has tylenol in it so if you have..."
first oxycodone is Percocet and all percocet has tylenol in it so if you have a Liver problem Do not take tylenol. so You will probably want to ask for Oxycotin because it is just codine no types of Over the counter pain medications

Q. Moderate drinking + tylenol/ibuprofen? for the past 3 weeks or so i've had about 2-4 beers a day. i developed a terrible headache about 2 days ago that has been unrelenting. sometimes its worse, sometimes its better, but it has yet to go away completely. when i started to take some tylenol, the warning said that if you drink more than 3 alcoholic drinks a day, you should consult your doctor before taking tylenol, and the same for ibuprofen. i havent had anything alcoholic to drink in almost 3 days. do you think its safe to take a couple of tylenol for my head? or should i continue to wait it out and not test my liver?
"Go with the advil..."
Go with the advil, its less harsh on the liver. Also, you should keep this in mind. If you continue drinking and you start having liver problems and need a transplant, good luck getting one because they wont give it to you. The people that have not abused their body are the ones that get it first and keep in mind we dont have enough extra livers laying around, so you arent going to get one

Q. Can you separate the hydrocodone from the apap(tylenol)? i have a prescription for hydrocodone 7.5/750 apap. i don't like taking pain killers at all, but the severity of the injury to my neck leaves me with little options. i only take them before bed to help with relaxation while i'm sleeping. i'm most concerned with the continued use of the tylenol because i'm already on a prescribed regiment of ibuprofen. prolonged use of both can and will likely cause damage to my liver, heart, and kidneys. also, i like to enjoy a beer here and there, and am terribly afraid of having a beer while on a regiment of either tylenol or ibuprofen. so i haven't had a good ole beer in a long time.
it's extremely difficult to get a schedule 2 narcotic over my schedule 3, and i'm not sure i even want it because i'm unaware of the dosages. the 7.5mg of hydrocodone once a night seems to do me well enough to sleep more comfortably than without it, so staying at that level is fine just don't want the tylenol.
is there any way i can remove the tylenol from the hydrocodone? i read a post where someone noted hydrocodone is more soluble in water than tylenol and to crush the pills, put them in 3x the pill power of warm water, refrigerate, and strain through a filter. the contents left in the filter would be mostly tylenol while the fluid strained would be most water and hydrocodone.
seeing as how i would never experiment with this procedure with anything more than one pill, i assume i can't hurt myself because at the very least it won't strain anything and i'll be taking one pill as usual.
anyone know if this is accurate? or another safe, simple way to extract the tylenol.
please don't assume i'm a dope head looking for a safe high, because i very much hate pain medication. i have two 3mm herniated discs in my low back that i've had since i was 17 (4 years now) that i never take pain meds for, i fight the pain because it's safer and keeps me feeling healthy not being medicated. i just recently came down with 3 1mm bulged discs in my neck which were a direct result of poor posture brought on by thoracic outlet syndrome. this pain is ridiculous in comparison to my low back, and greatly affects my left hand. i'm afraid of needles because my mother died of aids, so don't accuse me of wanting to shoot it up (this was an accusation on the other post).
i'm just a 21 yr old father who can't enjoy time with his child because of the pain and injuries he's suffered. i don't want to add liver failure to my list of problems while trying to seek comfort from the pain.
any help is appreciated, even if the help is from a chemist who says "don't do this, it's not safe". if you aren't a chemist, or in the medical field with knowledge that extracting the two aren't safe don't state what you don't know.
i'm extracting a comment in my information that is pertinent to those telling me to ask my doctor for stronger meds.
it's extremely difficult to get a schedule 2 narcotic over my schedule 3
"Prolonged use of ibuprofen or acetaminophen can cause damage to the liver and kidneys..."
It's not unsafe, it just won't work. It would be like trying to get the caffeine out of coffee grounds. It just doesn't work like that.
Yes, prolonged use of ibuprofen or acetaminophen can cause damage to the liver and kidneys, but not at reasonable doses. Unless you already have problems with those organs, it's unlikely to cause damage to your heart and liver. With your medication you can safely take five hydrocodone/apap a day. And you can take 2400mg of ibuprofen a day.
As for the alcohol, the general thought is that an otherwise healthy man can have 1-2 drinks (that's one can of beer, one glass of wine, or one shot) and 2800mg of acetaminophen daily. That's three of your painkillers.
If you are still really concerned, you can ask you doctor to try Darvon or Ultram, they are both schedule 4 so they have the same regulations as a 3. They just don't work very well.
But medically, there's no reason to stop doing what you are doing and start having a beer every once in a while.
Did you know that APAP stands for N-Acetyl-Para-Amino-Phenol, and name acetaminophen is the combination of the first few letters of each chemical compound?

Q. Is it okay to take extra strength tylenol every day? i have chronic lower back pain due to a congenital spinal fusion. i have been to physical therapy and am working on stretches and other exercises to strengthen my back and core muscles to reduce the pain. however, in the meantime there really isn't anything i can do other than take pain relievers to reduce the pain in my back while i work.
my question is, is it okay for me to take 1-2 doses of extra strength tylenol every day? i cannot take ibuprofen or other similar drugs because i'm already on a drug that makes me more prone to bleeding, tylenol is my only choice. it works well but i worry about whether or not it's good for my liver to take it daily. i don't have any liver problems, it's just something i'm curious about.
so is it okay to take tylenol daily for several weeks or months? are there other things i can do to reduce the pain while i'm working on the pt? thanks!
"You really have to abuse the tylenol before it can cause damage or..."
As long as you take it as directed and do not drink alcohol within 48 hours of taking it you should be fine. If you know you are going to be in a social situation where you may decide to have a glass or wine or something, just do not take it before or after.
You really have to abuse the tylenol before it can cause damage or else they would have taken it off the market by now, I am only happy it helps you, it does not really help some people.
If you want to be cautious just get your liver enzymes checked every few months.
Feel better.

Q. Ibuprofen making me sick? what should i take instead? for the past month i had been feeling nauseous almost every day. it would always get worse at night and sometimes i would make myself throw up so i would feel better. it would get to the point though, where i would be laying in bed and randomly start to feel sick. it would gradually start to get worse to the point of me curled up in pain and my legs would start to shake.
like i said, it was mostly at night but it would occur sometimes in the day too. usually after i would eat.
i was so confused as to what was causing this and kept telling my mom i didn't feel good but we never did anything about it.
later on i mentioned how taking tylenol all of the time could effect your liver and what not and she out of no where told me that i should stop taking ibuprofen because that might be what was hurting my stomach.
i had never for a second though that it was the ibuprofen, but what i thought about it i was taking close to 8-10 pills a day.
i started birth control close to a year ago for horrible cramps, but i can never remember to take the pill on time. as a result i will randomly start my period in the middle of a pack and when this happens i get pretty bad cramps. 3 or 4 ibuprofens get rid of it like that though. so i would be taking 6 or so a day just for that and then at night i was taking ibuprofen pms. i wasn't thinking about that at all. it usually hurt more at night, when i took the 2 extra pills.
it says on the bottle you're not supposed to exceed 6 in 24 hours. i'm assuming that taking 8 a day would hurt my stomach after a while.
the reason i took them for so long was that once i messed up taking the pill no matter how long i took it again after that i would still be on my period for a week or two. so it was a lot of taking ibuprofen.
since i found that out though i stopped taking it all together. i switched back to tylenol pms too.
i haven't had a stomach ache since.
what i want to know is though, do you think it was that causing my stomach aches, and what can i take instead? tylenol doesn't help my cramps at all and most midols have ibuprofen in them, as well as other stuff, and the normal dose isn't enough for me.
suggestions? (sorry this is so long, i just felt like telling you the whole story. plus, it's 1:30 am, i'm bored, not tired and just felt like typing.)
thanks!:)
"Ibuprofen does cause stomach ache - and you've been taking way too much..."
Ibuprofen does cause stomach ache - and you've been taking way too much. Max of 6 a day and only ever 1-2 at a time or you'll end up with an ulcer.
Try taking one with a normal dose of Tylenol; that gives two types of pain relief and some anti-inflammatory effect (which is why tylenol alone doesn't get rid of the cramps). Then wait AT LEAST HALF AN HOUR so the medication has a chance to be absorbed from your gut. Use some heat (a hot water bottle or something) while you wait, as this helps to relax the cramped muscles. If it hasn't fixed it by then, you can take the other ibuprofen tablet.
I know it can be hard to remember to take your pill at the right time, but you're not doing yourself any favours by taking it half-arsedly; you'd be better to dump it altogether and give your body a rest. Otherwise, keep the pack in your bag and set your cell phone alarm for the same time each day - if you're out with friends when it goes off, go off to the bathroom and take the pill in private.
